First day at college? Are you wondering where your class is? Did you miss your bus already?Have you made any friends or are you stuck with your phone? These are some of the most common scenes for a fresher. And every fresher that once was, experienced this sometime or the other.
To join a college is one thing but starting your new life at college for next 4 years is something else. You have now officially entered into a 4 year long commitment with Vasavi College of Engineering and there’s no going back. But take this from a senior who has spent two years in this college, this journey will be one memorable ride. But before i show you the entire picture of what college life is all about let me familiarise all you freshers with what this college comprises of.
The reason your parents send you to college:
Well lets start with the academics part which is the first reason for you to have joined college. Now that our college is Autonomous (incase you didn’t know here’s a headstart) rules have changed. It’s semester system each being for a time span of 4-5 months. There are internal exams similar to unit tests conducted twice in a semester with lab internals as well. And external exams at the end of semester along with lab external exams. The grading system is now in the form of CGPA(Cummulative Grade Point Average) with each semester end having a grade point called SGPA(Semester Grade Point Average). How the CGPA is calculated will be informed to all students by your respective department. Along with these exams there will be regular quizzes, assignments and mini projects that are compulsory and part of the curriculum.
The real reason why you must attend college :
That covers the major part of what academic curriculum is like for all departments with certain differences depending on the department subjects. Now you might be tired by just reading how much of work you will be facing but be rest assured our college comprises of some very interactive clubs for students who are interested in co-curricular and extra curricular activities. To name a few, we have Swayam an entrepreneurship development cell, Streetcause- a student run NGO, Abhinay and Themeballet –two dance clubs , Kriti-arts club,Sarvatra-Music club, sports club and some other clubs related to humanities and social sciences. These clubs provide students to showcase their skills and nurture their interests which adds to one’s academic excellence. There are also intra department clubs for every branch that are meant for students to practically apply theoritical knowledge gained in classes. It is highly recommended that everyone be part of atleast one club and develop an attitude of volunteership because it is your performance in such activities that will be evaluated during Campus Placements along with your grades.
When the academic year ends with a party:
Our college also hosts two major fests. One is the Technical fest-ACUMEN which is held for one day where all departments conduct their respective technical events and it is open to all colleges within the twin cities. The other is the cultural fest-EUPHORIA which is usually held for two days and this is conducted at the end of the academic year. It is a platform for students who would like to participate in dances, singing, dramatics and other such events. There will also be bands from different parts of the country and state that perform at the fest and the best part of the fest is the DJ night. Although it is for 45 minutes or one hour it is the most awaited part of the fest. Don’t miss out on it. Also this fest is open to other colleges as well. There is also one event that occurs annually that is the Traditional day where students dressup in their traditional attires for a day and there will be some competitions for the title “Mr and Miss Vasavi” that is open to first to fourth year students. But for those who don’t care much about the title you can still have fun with your friends by taking a million selfies because it is not everyday that we dressup in a saree or lungi.

Well now you know almost everything about your college. Wait. I almost forgot. Our college canteen. The biggest crowded adda of our college irrespective of what is served. Well i must say the food available is not that bad if you’re not that choosy. We have a frankie counter, a chaat counter, a donut counter and also a chai-coffee dabba counter around the canteen. They also provide breakfast and lunch meals and a evening snack most of the times. Our canteen may not be state-of-the-art but i love the look of the place. It almost looks like another department building only for food! We also have two stationery stores that meet our every need. So do use them incase you forget to buy a new book on the first day.

Final words :
Well you must’ve heard about how small our college looks compared to other colleges but trust me you will be glad it’s that small or rather just the perfect size because who wants to walk so far just to attend a lab/class? Its definitely well maintained and we have good greenery which captures the eye especially during the rains. And the most beautiful spot according to me is the sports ground with its lush green trees on the side walls and wide gap between the ECE block and the outer wall which looks beautiful from the ECE block.
Overall our college will change your mindset from the time you enter to the time of your graduation in some way or the other. Just be positive and accept what you get and if you go one step ahead you can make things better. You never know. So absorb as much knowledge, experience and skills as you can during your time at college because it will provide the ultimate exposure to the world out there. Hoping everyone has a good start and a great journey.
